However, over the holy weekend, it is estimated that 40,000 – 50,000 people will visit the sacred Santuario de Chimayo. The church was built between 1814 - 1816. The pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayo was originally started because U.S. soldiers and sailors prayed to Santo Nino during the infamous Bataan Death March. Due to the fact that there are several statues of Santo Nino located here, when they returned, the holy pilgrimage began. The pilgrimage was their way to demonstrate their thanks for their survival, their delivery from evil and also in memory of their fellow soldiers. However, even before the holy pilgrimage had begun, the Santuario de Chimayo was known for the healing, holy dirt of Chimayo. The Santuario de Chimayo has been called the "Lourdes of America" and it is known for its miraculous healings. There are testimonies that the extraordinary occurs here. People literally come from all parts of the world to seek cures for their ailments or in hopes of healing for a loved one.Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast looks forward to having you as our guest.
