Las Posada, Santa Fe, NM, Holiday Vacation, Casa Escondida B&B

During your December stay at Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast, your participation in the “Las Posadas”, is a Santa Fe holiday vacation must-do. Casa Escondida B&B is a Santa Fe area B&B, located in historic Chimayo, NM (just 35 minutes north of Santa Fe, on the High Road). Las Posadas is a Santa Fe event whose origins are based upon a New Mexican Christmas tradition that dates back to when the Spanish first arrived in New Mexico (17th century). Las Posadas is Spanish for "lodging" or "accommodations". So, Las Posadas is an outdoor re-enactment of Mary and Josephs’ search for lodging in Bethlehem. The candle-light, Las Posadas procession in Santa Fe, NM, is on Sunday, December 9th, 2012 at 5:30 PM. So bundle up against the cold and join us! Las Posadas begins on the Santa Fe plaza, as Mary and Joseph travel on foot from the Palace of the Governors and then proceed around the plaza. Along the procession route, Mary and Joseph are berated by characters that represent the devil, while the locals and visitors, clasping their candles, walk in the procession behind Mary and Joseph. The locals will in turn, heckle the devil, as these characters tell Mary and Joseph to move along…there is no room at the inn. The procession concludes as Mary and Joseph arrive back at the Palace of the Governors, representing their arrival at the stable where the baby Jesus is to be born. Upon arrival, everybody enters the luminaria-lit outdoor courtyard at the Palace of the Governors. Here, they celebrate by eating holiday cookies, downing hot cider and singing Christmas carols as they warm themselves by the bonfires and the musicians play. This event is actually celebrated in MANY Northern New Mexico communities as Christmas approaches. The Las Posadas in Santa Fe is just one of many of these celebrations. So when you are wondering what types of things there are to do in Santa Fe during the holiday period, put Las Posadas on your list! Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast has rooms available throughout the holiday season, as well as year round. We look forward to having you as our guest!
